Life is intense, life is a journey and has it’s ups and downs, which will inevitably throw things at us; whether that is loss, grief, or a stressful situation. Our brains and bodies have natural responses, such as the fight or flight response where stress hormones such as cortisol are released in the body. Elevated levels of cortisol in the body can interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increased weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, the list goes on and on. So many people are just so busy in their day to day lives. ‘Busy’ is the new ‘fine’ when asked ‘how are you?’ The ripple effect of a stressed out society increases cortisol levels across the board. This creates a public health crisis and a huge drain on our economy.
Fear also increases cortisol. Regular physical activity will decrease fear by increasing your self-confidence, resilience, and fortitude—which will reduce cortisol. Yoga will have similar benefits with added benefits of mindfulness training.
When we can step out of the intensity of life and step onto the yoga mat it just feels good. To dedicate an hour or so to yourself and to your yoga practice is just so beneficial to your health. It is not only good for you, but also for everyone else around you. A calmer, healthier, happier person can also have a ripple effect on those around them. So dedicate some time to yourself, those around you and your practice.
Yoga makes you feel better and more energised because it increases oxygen flow to your brain and cells, and it enhances body’s own power of detoxification. If you keep on practicing it you are expected to experience the following:
1. A deep mindfulness which will make your perceptions vivid.
2. A mental calm and wellness that will make you enjoy every waking moment.
3. A leaner body and better digestive ability requiring lesser food mass.
4. A lower pulse rate like athletes and a longer life with reduced aging.
